'Bottle2fashion' was created by AQUA and H&M Indonesia. The idea is to recycle plastic bottles in Indonesia through the Recycling Business Unit (RBU) built by AQUA, which will then be processed by the H&M supply chain in Indonesia and be used to make fashion products to be sold by H&M group. This collaboration project supports the Indonesian Government’s program to reduce marine plastic waste, especially in tourism area of Kepulauan Seribu (Thousand Islands). Indonesia, with the longest coastline in the world, is at great risk for marine pollution coming from land with plastic waste as its major contaminant.
Why it matters
There are 700 water bottle companies in Indonesia, while AQUA is the market leader in the country. The public thus expects the company to lead an effort to manage post-consumer packaging waste. With this collaboration, AQUA will strengthen the collection efforts for plastic bottle waste, especially in Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) and surrounding coastal areas, in order to reduce waste pollution on land which may end up in the ocean. Therefore, this project will help to promote our commitment to create a circular economy with plastic, as a solution for the waste issue in Indonesia.
How it works
The Recycling Business Unit is the center of this partnership: it sorts and processes plastic bottle waste – shipped from collection centers that AQUA nurtures in Thousand Islands and surrounding coastal areas – into PET flakes. The flakes are then supplied to H&M production facilities, that transform them into fashion products, starting with gloves. The gloves have been sold in H&M stores since January 2018.
How it creates value
The project has two main benefits for the Recycling Business Unit and its stakeholders. First, the initiative allows for an increase in the collection of plastic waste and the establishment of a model for the circular economy of plastic waste, from upstream to downstream. This process is aligned with our ambition to recover more than we produce by 2030. Secondly, it will expand the network, reach more waste pickers and provide more impact for them.
