B Corp is a movement for businesses seeking to combine financial success with social and environment goals. Our ambition to obtain this certification is an expression of our long-time commitment to sustainable business and to Danone’s dual project of economic success and social progress. At the end of 2017, five Danone subsidiaries were certified as a B Corp, and about the same number are close to reaching that same goal, including DanoneWave in the U.S. and AQUA in Indonesia. While attaining B Corp status has so far been the domain of small and medium privately held companies, Danone has been partnering with B Lab—the non-profit organization accrediting B Corp certification—since 2015 to help define a B Corporation model suitable for publicly listed multinationals. It is a significant step toward making sustainable business mainstream—and which we believe to be the future.
In 2017, DanoneWave, our newly combined entity that brings together the former WhiteWave activities and Danone’s historic dairy business in the U.S., was incorporated as a Public Benefit Corporation. Our subsidiary has thus officially been given the legal mandate to serve the interests of not only shareholders, but also society at large through a clearly defined purpose and targeted goals. DanoneWave aims to achieve B Corp certification by 2020.
